Green

Green tea is, just like black tea, white tea and oolong tea, made from the leaves from the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Green tea is a tea that has gone through a minimal oxidation process (aka fermentation process). To stop the oxidation process the tea leaves are heated up, either by steam or by roasting in a pan or oven.

Green tea has long been used as both a beverage and a medicine in many parts of Asia to help everything from controlling bleeding and helping heal wounds to regulating body temperature, blood sugar and to promote digestion.

Green teas  come in many different varieties, as each green tea producing country has been creating their own specialties.

Green tea has been subject to scientific and medical studies to determine the extent of its long claimed health benefits. Some of these studies have shown evidence suggesting that green tea can lower the risk of developing heart disease and certain types of cancer. Green tea is also believed to help in weight loss and to boosting the metabolic rate.

Brewing or steeping is the process of making a cup of tea. In general, three grams (approx. one teaspoon) of tea per cup should be used to make a cup of tea. With very fine leaf tea use a bit less, with very large leaf tea use a bit more. A good quality tea can be used for multiple times.

When brewing your green tea, it is important to not use too hot water and not to use too long brewing time as it will result in a bitter, astringent brew. Brewing temperature for green tea should generally be between 80-85°C.
